Glenknoll Grapevine
June 2013 Edition
Principal’s Message
As we bring another year to a close, I would like to congratulate and thank our parents, staff, and students for all of your hard work. In a recent Orange County Register article, Glenknoll was rated a "Perfect 10." We are one of only 33 Orange County Schools (and the only one in PYLUSD) with this "double 10" rating. The rating is based on data that was recently released from the spring 2012 CST Scores. We received both a state ranking of “10” and a "similar schools" ranking of “10.” The state ranking puts us in the top 10% of all elementary schools in the state while the “similar schools” is even harder to achieve. It indicates that we are in the top 10% of schools with similar socio-economic status, parent education, and mobility.
Great work parents, staff, and students!P

Wow! Boxtops Galore!
Mrs. Orwig's class won the overall Box Tops competition but five other classes reached their box top goals. Mrs. Rees's, Mrs. Taylor's, Mrs. Wren's, Mrs. Laurich's, and Mrs. Riggs's classes will get ice cream parties. Yum! Yum! The younger Glenknoll students participated in enormous numbers. Mrs. Laurich's class has a 100% participation rate. Every one of her students brought in box tops. Kudos to Mrs. Laurich's class!
The PTA would like to recognize two special students. Kindergartener Brendan Loboda's 100 Day project was 100 box tops. Talk about school spirit! Lastly, very special thanks go to Aidan Dobyns and his family. They contributed over 4,200 box tops.
Wonderful job, Glenknoll families! Remember to clip and save over the summer. Let's collect even more next year!
REACH Foundation ShamRock ‘n Run:
Glenknoll had 43 participants registered for the ShamRock 'n Run who designated Glenknoll as their school. As a result, Glenknoll received $215 ($5 per participant). Mark your calendars for next year’s run which is scheduled for March 16, 2014.
Library News:
Summer is a wonderful time to spend quality time with a good book! Encourage your students to spend time exploring a new world, going on an exciting adventure, or learning more about the world, by reading a great book. Watch for our Glenknoll Summer Reading Program log. Read at least 10 books or more over the summer and turn in your reading log in September for a free treat.
This year we have had some fabulous book grants and donations. Thank you to the Glenknoll PTA! With the extraordinary generosity and continuing support of the PTA we have been able to continue to add books to our Accelerated Reader program and expand our non-fiction collection. The Library will be adding a series of Science books on the Elements, supplement our Ancient Civilization collection as well as update our Non-fiction titles.
We have also been extremely fortunate to have had a number of donations this year as well as spectacular finds; thank you Glenknoll families and students. In particular the Saba and Stewart families and Girl Scout troop 2160 have donated many boxes of books throughout the year.
Looking to the future, watch for the start of the Glenknoll Birthday Book Club this fall. Students may donate a new book at the time of their birthday (or “half-birthday”). Their donation will be honored with a special Cougar Paw bookplate placed in the book with their name and date. Have a great summer...reading!
Science Night: Science Night was a HUGE SUCCESS thanks the to the many volunteers’ and teachers’ efforts as well as all those who attended.
Teacher Appreciation Luncheon: Many thanks to all those who contributed donations to the teacher’s luncheon. It was greatly appreciated by the staff.
Cinema City Movie Tickets: Tickets are almost SOLD OUT. Submit your order soon.
Special Thanks: We wish to acknowledge our fearless leader, Stephanie Mancini, for her countless hours of service to Glenknoll as the PTA president this past school year. Her drive and passion were evident in every project she led. Stephanie, many thanks to you for your dedication to Glenknoll! You definitely had your ‘game on’!
